I have always considered red to be a lovely color! It is vibrant, powerful, and attention-grabbing. It has been a color that I have admired for so long. I have envied this color on many people (especially the red lip look). But I never ever would consider wearing this color myself — until now.
You see, I like to stretch myself by doing things I don’t normally do or don’t want to do. I am a creature of habit and prefer the easier route. But I know first hand that it is important to push yourself to grow and expand — whether you like it or not.
I oftentimes force myself to do something I fear — it helps me emotionally mature and get over my insecurities. In my head, I have thought for so long that red doesn’t look great against my skin, hair color, eye color, blah, blah, blah….I felt that red was only reserved for the most stunning of individuals like Marilyn Monroe, Beyonce, and Jennifer Lopez.
For some strange reason, I thought I was not beautiful enough to wear red. Crazy, how talking about fashion can often turn into psychology and a therapy session! I knew that I need to change my mindset fast because some habits are meant to be broken. I knew that my soul deserved to be loved, valued and cherished.
I decided to head to H&M to find the red-red-reddest top I could find! Lo and behold, this bold red sweater was hanging on a rack right when I walked in. I knew it was a sign I couldn’t deny. The red sweater and I went to the dressing room to get acquainted (poor lighting and all). To, my surprise I liked the way red looked on me.
My take home for you is this — believe in your inherent beauty! God gave you your internal and external characteristics to make you unique and different; trust me, different is GOOD! Do not let you exterior features define who you are inside.
This Christmas season as we think about giving to others, make sure to include yourself on that list. Love yourself unconditionally and make peace with your reflection. You are a gift to this world!
