From March 12–17, we traveled to Puerto Rico for Elijah’s Caribbean Volleyball Championship—and what an unforgettable experience it was! This was our second year attending, and although it’s bittersweet knowing it will be his last year competing in this tournament, we truly made the most of it as a family. I couldn’t wait to share it with you.
To be honest, I wasn’t sure I’d even be able to go. I had been sick for almost five weeks—first thinking it was just a cold, then the flu, then testing positive for COVID, and finally battling a sinus infection that needed two rounds of antibiotics. But thankfully, I recovered just in time. I didn’t want to miss this trip for anything.

I was excited to pack my bags (shoutout to my Amazon suitcases—they hold so much and still look chic!) and even prouder that my main checked bag came in at 49 pounds, just under the 50-lb limit. A small win, but a win nonetheless!
The flight, though—whew. It was long, with a layover in Philadelphia where my right ear struggled to pop, and then another leg to San Juan. I was so relieved when we finally landed. But sitting between Albert and Elijah during the flight made everything better. I love these two with my whole heart, and just being near them fills me with so much joy.

We stayed at the same hotel as last year—the Aloft San Juan, a stylish, modern boutique hotel located near Distrito T-Mobile. Our room had two cozy queen beds, and one fun perk was the $35 daily credit we received to use at the XYZ Bar. We definitely took advantage of it, treating ourselves each night to our favorite appetizers, meals, and desserts. The boys had a blast swimming in the outdoor pool, and I made sure to squeeze in a few workouts during my free time—it felt good to move after all that travel!

Now let’s talk volleyball! Last year’s tournament was an eye-opening experience. Volleyball is huge in Puerto Rico, and the local teams are incredibly talented. Elijah and his team gave it their all but didn’t win a single game. Still, it was such a cool experience competing at the Puerto Rico Convention Center—we were grateful just to be there.

This year, I reminded Elijah to just go in and play his heart out—no expectations, just give your best. And wow… did his team deliver! Elijah plays for OCVC’s 14-1s team based in Ladera Ranch, CA, and they shocked everyone by taking SECOND PLACE in the gold division! Can you believe it?! We were over the moon with pride. Watching our boys play with such heart and focus was absolutely thrilling.
The awards ceremony took place at Distrito T-Mobile, just steps from our hotel, and it was incredible. The team was honored on stage, received individual medals, and were awarded a trophy as a team. Seeing Elijah celebrated on that stage, in that moment, was something I’ll never forget. I’m so thankful for his amazing coaches, Coach Kevin and Coach Marcello, who believe in these boys and bring out their best. And Elijah’s teammates? They’re more like brothers. The bond they share and the way they play together is pure magic.

We also managed to squeeze in some fun off the court. Albert and Elijah visited the beach, toured the San Juan National Historic Site, and explored Old San Juan, where they enjoyed a delicious lunch. I stayed back at the hotel to rest and recharge for the tournament days—honestly, a cozy nap in pajamas was exactly what I needed.

We also had a fantastic team dinner at La Cueva del Mar, known for its fresh seafood dishes served in Puerto Rico’s signature criollo style. And for a casual bite, La Burguesía served up some of the best gourmet burgers and seasoned fries we’ve ever had—so fun and flavorful!

Being a boy-mom and watching Elijah’s love for volleyball grow over the years has been one of the greatest joys of my life. He’s been playing since 5th grade, and I’ve seen firsthand how much team sports have helped him grow—not just as an athlete, but as a person. The discipline, the friendships, the sense of purpose—it’s been so good for him.

One of the memories we’ll always treasure from this trip is Elijah receiving a custom pair of SLUNKS from his coach, designed especially for the tournament. We also bought the limited edition Puerto Rico SLUNKS, which felt like the perfect keepsake to remember this unforgettable experience. I’m beyond proud of Elijah—not just for placing second at a national tournament, but for the heart, dedication, and sportsmanship he shows every time he steps on the court. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for him
