In my opinion you do not have to spend a fortune to look like a million bucks. After years of styling myself and others and learning to be budget conscious I have learned a few tricks! In addition, changing my mindset to seek the value in purchases (vs. not buying something because it is on sale) and learning to embrace what I have (i.e. body type) has made me an expert at always looking put together with ease and confidence. And you can, too!
Some may wonder who cares? Why would it be important to look put together? Shouldn’t the world accept me at face value? Yes, your character, personality, talents, and heart are fundamental in your identity and self-worth. I am an advocate of that. But, I also testify that looking your best and showcasing your personality through style greatly benefits your well-being, self-confidence, and how people perceive you.
Remember, the saying “You never get a second chance to make a first impression”? I find this to be absolutely true! It is not as hard as you think to look effortlessly put together. So, whether you are heading into the office, PTA meeting, running errands or hitting the gym here are my 5 tips to looking put together.
1. IT IS ALL IN THE DETAILS
The small details in my clothing and accessories all add up to major style factor. Pay attention to those details and select items that have that little ‘wow” factor. Whether it is the fringe in my heels, the gold metal accents in my belt, or subtle criss-cross braided straps in the back of my maxi dress – these details make a difference and transform any old basic to a more unique and interesting piece.
2. BE GUIDED BY THE FIT
Wearing clothes that fit you instead of the clothes ‘wearing’ you is a key point in looking put together. Select clothes that suit your body type and frame your assets well! Just because a clothing piece is in vogue doesn’t necessarily mean it will compliment your figure and personality. Let’s be real right?
Do a little experimentation if you tend to hide yourself in baggy clothes try putting on clothes that frame your body better. Don’t be afraid to show off “what your mama gave you!” I would also recommend finding a tailor to alter clothing for a custom fit. This makes all the difference in looking well dressed. And trust me, it isn’t all that expensive either. I have called around and finally found one that does a great job for a reasonable price. It is worth it!
3. Give Your Items TLC
My mom has taught me at an early age to care for my belongings. I am grateful for this habit she instilled in my youth. Because of this I still have dresses, jackets, coats, and jewelry pieces that have lasted years (decades even) and I plan to pass them on to my girls. At one point or another they will come back into fashion. Take time to store your jewelry/accessories, purses, shoes, and apparel carefully. Launder and/or clean your pieces appropriately as well.
4. COMFORT IS A PLUS BUT STAY AWAY FROM SLOPPY
There are those days where you want to stay in your PJs all day! I have been there and it feels great. But, when I step out of the door I make sure that my casual wear is clean and well-fitted. T-shirts, jeans, and a top knot are perfect for casual days. Make sure your shoes are clean too. Have pride in the way you look. Also, make sure your elastics fabrics are form fitting and you are good to go!
When you step out the door make sure loose threads are trimmed, lint is removed, and wrinkles are steamed out. Also, buff those shoes if it is needed.
5. THE CONFIDENCE FACTOR
This is my favorite secret to looking put together and that is having confidence. My confidence begins in my posture. When I walk tall (no slouchy shoulders), chest and chin lifted, shoulders back and tummy tucked in – I look and feel great! Something as simple as being mindful of your posture will help you feel self-assured. I invite you to try this! I am also mindful of the way I sit too. Yes, I am a weirdo but it is important to me.
I would love to hear your feedback about my 5 tips to always looking put together! Will you try at least one? Or share with me your tips in looking put together. Let’s have a discussion! Always remember though the key to looking fabulous is feeling fabulous from the inside. Staying true to your personality and body type wins overall.

Great tips as always! #4 is a great reminder, I think I fail in this category often. I just need to make it more of a priority. When I wear jewelry and/or put on a shoe with a little height I feel empowered! Seems silly, but it’s true! Also a little mascara can take the day to a new level.
I was just thinking the same thing the power of make up. Mascara is also my go-to too! The little bit of mascara can make your face come alive and ready to give those flirty glances to your significant other! Thanks for your comment and support! xoxo
These are good to remember! Thanks for the tips Debbie!
