Let’s be real — gray roots show up way faster than we expect them to. And with salon prices rising and schedules getting busier, I needed a quick, affordable way to refresh my color from the comfort of home. That’s when I found Polar Haircare’s Instant Dye Shampoo… and after 3 months of using it, I have thoughts.

If you’re curious whether this viral shampoo hair dye actually works, how I use it, and what you need to know before trying it — keep reading!

Why I Gave Polar Haircare a Try
I’d seen this product floating around online and wasn’t sure if it was legit or just another internet gimmick. But I was so tired of rushing to the salon every few weeks, I decided to give it a go — and to my surprise, it really worked.
I’ve now used it monthly for 3 months and love the results. I only apply it to my roots, and the color blends beautifully with my natural hair. It lasts until regrowth and leaves my hair soft and shiny.

Clean Ingredients That Make Me Feel Good
One of the things I really appreciate about Polar Haircare is that it’s made with natural, plant-based ingredients. The formula includes soothing extracts like ginger root, ginseng, and angelica, which are known for promoting scalp health and adding softness to the hair.
It’s free of harsh chemicals like ammonia, which means there are no strong fumes to breathe in and nothing aggressive going on your strands. That alone makes me feel so much better about using this regularly. I love knowing that I can refresh my roots without compromising the health of my hair — or my body.

Patch Test First! Don’t Skip This Step
Before using any hair dye — even shampoo-style ones — you need to do a skin sensitivity patch test. This is super important to avoid any allergic reactions. I put this out here because many of you have sensitive skin.
Here’s how to do it:
- Apply a small amount of the product to the inside of your elbow.
- Let it dry and leave it for 24 hours.
- Watched for any redness, itching, or swelling.
Full transparency I didn’t do this because I don’t have sensitive skin really — but I wanted to share this bit of information for others – just to be safe.

What You’ll Need
- Polar Haircare Instant Dye Shampoo (it is available in black, dark brown and light brown)
- Gloves
- A coloring bowl & brush (optional but helpful)
- Vaseline or a barrier cream
- Old towel or cape
- Timer
- Sink or shower for rinsing

How I Apply It to My Roots
I’ve tried both direct hand application and the brush & bowl method — here’s what I do now:
- Prep: I apply Vaseline around my hairline and ears to prevent staining, and put on gloves.
- Dispense: I pump the product into a coloring bowl (I use more than recommended — this helps cover grays evenly).
- Apply: Using a coloring brush, I apply it directly to my roots, section by section.
- Wait: I let it sit for about 10 minutes.
- Rinse: I rinse it out with warm water — no shampoo or conditioner needed afterward!

Real Results After 3 Months
The results have been pretty consistent for me. While you might spot a few stubborn grays in my before and afters — which could be user error or just extra-resistant strands — overall, I’m really happy with how well it works. It blends beautifully with my natural color, my hair feels soft, and I love being able to touch up my roots at home whenever I need it — no appointment necessary!

Bonus tip: Be careful — it can stain your skin and countertops. Protect your area and wear gloves! If you see any residue on your skin or countertops make sure to wipe it off immediately and you should be fine.
