How to Wear a Hat and Look Fabulous
What comes to mind when you think of wearing a hat? Or are you not sure exactly how to wear a hat and look fabulous?
Well for some, hats can seem somewhat seasonal or even unfashionable – especially if you’re not a “hat person”. However: I am here today to change that belief. I personally think hats can be worn any time of year, for pretty much any occasion. Even in the blistering heat of the summer, I love a good floppy straw hat (like this adorable one); and in the chilly winter, a cute beanie is to die for (like this one by Helen Kaminski!)
Some more of my favorite styles that I also wanted to mention include:
- Fedoras
Fedoras take a unique personality to pull off; however, I’ve found that people who branch out and try fedoras often look FAN-TAS-TIC! I love, love, love this fedora from BRIXTON; its loose style is classic yet modern all at once.
- Sailor Hat or Fiddler Caps
This is the epitome of the fall time hat, in my opinion. These hats make me feel straight out of a Vogue shoot, and oh-so-chic. This is one of my personal favorites.
- Knitted Hats and Beanies
Created by the iconic Kate Spade, this style is what makes the perfect beanie or knit hat; classic, flirty, and cozy!
- Ball Caps
Ball caps are one of the most universal styles. You can wear them to run errands or for a day out – they’re incredibly versatile. (This or this = always a good choice).
- Felt Floppy Hats
Floppy hats are the definition of vintage bombshell couture. This one corresponds with pretty much any gorgeous, flirty summer ensemble.
Also – if you don’t think hats are flattering on you, try finding one that flatters your face shape. For example, a wide-brimmed hat or floppy hat is recommended for pretty much every face shape, whereas a boater hat tends to mainly suit oval and heart faces best, while fedoras suit round and square shapes. It’s simply a matter of playing around with styles and finding what works for you and being willing to embrace your unique inner fashionista.
I definitely recommend shopping around and trying new things…what you find might surprise you. Personally, my favorite place to pick up a new hat is at Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack. I adore their varying designs, and I love finding different ways to spice up my look and wardrobe. I’m all about trends, but I love going my own way fashion-wise and experimenting…don’t you?

Oh, I can wait to see them!
My husband LOVEs when I wear hats and for some reason I never really wear them! I need to try again asap because I mean, then I don’t have to do my hair, LOL!
That’s such a cute hat! I love hats but very rarely wear them… other than my bobble hat in winter!
Well, I need to see that bobble hat!
Thanks for this. I never feel like I can pull the hat look off. I need all the help I can get! 🙂
Hats are so fun to wear! I even have a visor I wear when walking up to pick my son up from school. I value the sun protection. xo
I have a felt floppy hat that I love but I’ve never worn it because I don’t know how to wear it or what to wear with it. But I got it for $1 so I had to buy it! I mostly wear baseball hats with my hair in a ponytail. Or my big straw floppy hat when we will be outside but not where it’s windy so it doesn’t fly off.
$1? You basically got it for free! LOL!
I am LOVING that River Island hat! And floppy hats are such a staple in my closet
Thank you so much Lauren!
This is so cute. I’ve always wanted to wear certain hats but I wasn’t sure If I could pull them off. Im definitely trying it now.
Hi Denay! I would love to see you sport this hat style!
I love the hat you are wearing and your hair looks awesome. It’s taken me a few years to figure out my hat style, but it’s also so dependent on my hair length so I like having options. A good beanie never does me wrong and I love the Kate Spade one you shared. I wish I could pull off the Wesley Wool Fedora, but as of yet, I haven’t made it work, one day!
Hi Angela! I have so much hair myself that finding the perfect hat is important.
I must say it is lovely piece and I love your style. It is lovely hat. I love the second picture. You look beautiful.
Thank you so much Pooja!
Well, you look fabulous for sure! I like your outfit too, your belt and that little straw bag!
Thank you so much Helene!
I agree, just different hats for different people! You look fab in yours. My hat style varies, but I suit the larger styles for sure x
Hi Melanie! Thank you for stopping by! xo
So, true! Hats are perfect for bad hair days!
You look cute in hats. I, on the otherhand, look silly. At least that is what my kids tell me. But seriously, I should try wearing them more often.
Hats are a great way to accessorize an outfit or hide a bad hair day! Love your outfit
I’ve never been much for accessories beyond earrings but I love this post. You look amazing in your hat as well.
