On June 6, 2024, I watched my daughter walk across the stage to receive her high school diploma, and a wave of emotions washed over me. Graduation day is a momentous occasion, culminating years of hard work, growth, and transformation. It’s a day filled with pride and joy, but also a touch of nostalgia and bittersweet reflection.

The Early Years: From First Steps to First Grade
It feels like just yesterday when she took her first steps, her tiny hands reaching out for support and her eyes filled with curiosity. Those early years were filled with wonder and I loved watching her interact with the world. As she started school, I watched her navigate the world of learning, making friends, and discovering her passions. Even though she was timid at times, she was also quite independent at the same time. Once, I thought I knew her, Chloe would surprise me with something new about her personality and interests.
Middle School: A Time of Change and Growth
Middle school brought its own set of challenges and triumphs. She was at a regular school for her first year of middle school and at the time her big sister Emi and her would ride their bikes to school. Then they both decided to audition for a spot in the Orange County School of the Art – Ballroom Conservatory program, which was hard to get in and quite the drive from home — and they both got in!
It was a period of significant change, both physically and emotionally. She faced new academic pressures, social dynamics, and the complexities of adolescence. Despite the occasional struggles, she persevered with resilience and determination. I was amazed at her ability to adapt and grow, always finding her footing even in uncertain times, especially during COVID with remote learning.
High School: The Final Stretch
High school was a whirlwind of activities, achievements, and experiences. From late-night tech rehearsals to exhilarating moments performing for various venues across Orange County, she embraced it all. She excelled academically in honor and AP classes, participated in ballroom outreach extracurricular performance groups, and formed lasting friendships. Watching her juggle multiple responsibilities with grace and dedication made me incredibly proud.
Overcoming Challenges
There were certainly hurdles along the way. Whether it was a difficult exam, intensive dance competitions and performances, personal struggles, or traffic on the freeway to school, she faced them head-on. Her ability to overcome obstacles and maintain her focus on her goals was inspiring. As a parent, I offered support and guidance, but it was her inner strength that truly shone through. One of the great things about Chloe is she understands the importance of hard work. It doesn’t deter her at all.
The Graduation Ceremony: A Moment of Pride
The day of the graduation ceremony was filled with excitement and anticipation. As I saw her in her cap and gown, I couldn’t help but reflect on the journey we had taken together. The ceremony itself was a blur of proud moments and happy tears. Hearing her name called and seeing her receive her diploma was a moment of pure joy.
When I was a young parent, seasoned parents would tell me how time flies so fast when raising kids. I would look at them in dismay because I was in the thick of parenting and their words didn’t make any sense! But, I am here to tell you it is true. This journey of parenting your little one into high school graduation does go so fast. I wish we could reverse time or go back to certain times as a young parent and truly enjoy the journey.
The Bittersweet Farewell
Graduation is not just an ending, but also a beginning. It marks the transition from one chapter of life to another. While I am incredibly excited for her future, there is a bittersweet feeling knowing that she will soon be embarking on her path, independent of the daily routines and comforts of home. The house will be a little quieter, and our lives will change in ways both big and small.
She is excited to move out and venture on her own! Sleeping in the dorms away from the comforts of home is a big step in adulting. I know she is excited for her freedom which I guess is a compliment to my husband and me. A testament that we have raised a strong, confident, and independent young lady. However, it isn’t easy to let go….at least for me. Sometimes, I don’t feel ready for this transition but it is happening whether I am ready or not.
Looking Ahead: Hopes and Dreams
As she steps into the next phase of her life, I have countless hopes and dreams for her. The academic rigor of OCSA has prepared her well for the challenges of higher education, and she is now ready to enter an amazing university. I hope she continues to pursue her passions, find success in her endeavors, and build meaningful relationships. Most importantly, I hope she remains true to herself, carrying forward the values and lessons she has learned over the years.
Each year she will blossom into the woman is supposed to be. I have told her many times that I don’t want her to live her life to any expectations she thinks I may have for her. It is her life and I truly want her to be happy. I hope that Chloe remembers how amazing she is and beautiful and whole just the way she is – will make me so happy. I just want her to be happy and feel happy in her decisions and paths in life.
A Parent’s Reflection
Graduation day is a milestone that signifies both an ending and a beginning. It is a celebration of all that has been achieved and an exciting anticipation of what lies ahead. As I reflect on my daughter’s journey, particularly her transformative experience at OCSA’s Ballroom Conservatory, I am filled with a deep sense of pride, joy, and hope for the future. Here’s to the beautiful journey of growing up, and the many adventures yet to come.
I am so proud of you Chloe! I love you to pieces and I am so proud to be your mama!
