Reece is our rescue dog that we adopted two years ago from the San Bernandio Animal Shelter. We just love her to pieces, thus her name Reece for Reese’s Pieces buts spelled with a “c” (just to be cool) and for the color of her fur. Reece is an important component of our family and family vacations are often planned around her. Truth be told, I really wanted a fourth child (but secretly I knew our three was just right). However, I couldn’t fight the feeling that I really wanted another thing to love and cuddle on! With the help of my kids, we gently coaxed my husband to get us a puppy! There was so much resistance from him at first. But, we weren’t going to give up!
I agreed with Albert that our plates were full and that having a dog was like having another child. He wondered if the kids had time to care for one as they are busy with school, church and extracurricular activities after-school. However, the kids and I reassured him that we would take care of it and accept full responsibility for our new pet. After a year of “coaxing” it finally worked and Albert found the perfect rescue dog that was meant to be ours. Read our adoption story here.
If you are thinking about adopting a dog, I am giving you my thumbs up! Our family is so happy and blessed to have this fur baby in our lives! There is no wonder that dogs are considered human’s best friend. But, did you know that there are many health benefits to owning a dog that are backed by science? Here are 5 health benefit to owning a dog you may find interesting:
1. HEART HAPPY
Dog’s are good for your heart. Cuddle time does wonders for your heart. Researchers from the American Cancer Society discovered that owning a pet could lower your chance of cardiovascular disease.
2. KEEP MOVING
Dogs keep you moving thus increasing your daily activity. Did you know that dog owners tend to be more physically fit that non-pouch lovers? Dogs help keep us active.
3. NATURAL HAPPY PILL
Owning a dog offers incredible therapy. When you spend time with a dog whether playing or cuddling, your brain releases hormones to give you a mood lift. Dogs too get that immediate pick-me-up. It is a win-win for all.
4. LOWERS DEPRESSION
Feeling alone and isolated are emotions that are not easy to deal with. Dog owners are reported to be more happy because they feel a sense of belonging. Improved self-esteem and and overall well-being are side affects from dog ownership.
5. ENHANCED IMMUNE SYSTEM
I was pleasantly surprised when I found out that owning a dog helps to boost your immunity and fight allergies. Dogs help us function our best by exposing us to dirt and other environmental and natural substances (i.e. dust, pollen, etc.,).
Go and give your pup a gratitude hug for keeping your heart happy!

I’m not a dog person, but I feel a lot of this applies, at least for me personally, to my cat too! Maybe other than keeping moving because she is a lazy cat!!
Your dog is definitely your fourth baby. Such a lover. I cried more when my dog died than some relatives.
Our dog has definitely helped me be a happier person! It’s nice to come home after a long day and see that happy face waiting to see you!

The mental health benefits of owning a dog must be huge. Plus, all the walking you get to do.
Having a dog help me alot. It gives me a lot of benefits in life. It gives me mo happines in life.
I also have a dog. I often take him out, feed him and play with him. I find that the biggest benefit of having a dog is having a friend and he make me feel good.
I think one of the most amazing things I have found about dogs is that they are so emotionally intuitive. And so with the depression, my dog senses it intuitively. He just seems to know. And so I cannot imagine a life without him.
Wow your dog is soooo cute. I have never owned a dog but my hubby is crazy about dogs. 🙂
